Publish a workbook on Amazon KDP
Workbooks are the working books — the ones children write in, trace in, and press pencils into. That makes the layout rules stricter than any other book: the gutter, the write-in space, and the answer key are the product. These three guides cover the whole territory, written for teachers, tutors, homeschool families, and first-time educational authors.
I write these as an early educator who publishes her own books through KDP. The print rules below are the same ones my published books are built to.

The whole path: planning exercises that teach, page setup, margins, page-count math, and honest pricing examples.
- 2Workbook Page Size, Gutter, and Answer Key Formatting Guide
The layout deep-dive: the gutter table, usable write-in space, page numbering, and the three answer-key placements that work.
- 3How Teachers Can Publish a Classroom Workbook on KDP
The teacher's edition: who owns your materials, publication releases, fundraising math, and the class-keepsake idea.
Quick reference
| Trim size | 8.5 × 11 in portrait · 2550 × 3300 px at 300 DPI |
| Gutter | 0.5 in up to 150 pages · 0.625 in for 151–300 · 0.75 in for 301–500 |
| Write-in space | ≥ 0.5 in inside the trim, clear of the gutter side |
| Answer key | Back of book (standard), per unit, or separate download |
| Paper | B&W on 60# white — design for pencil and crayon, not markers |
What a well-set page looks like
Trace the letter B
A representative layout: the writing lines stay half an inch inside the trim, nothing crosses toward the binding side, and the page number sits in the outer corner where the answer key can point to it.
